Federal officials say “rioters violently stormed” the facility. Protesters say hundreds more were just walking peacefully when the tear gas hit.
Portland police arrested four people Saturday during protests at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in the South Waterfront area.
Later, some protesters directly outside the ICE building also appeared to throw objects towards the roof where federal officers fired crowd control munitions, including flash-bang grenades and pepper balls. Portland police posted online that they had to close South Macadam Ave. for a period of time to “keep drivers from being affected” by the gas.
Prosecutors said 27-year-old Mark Allen Lee pleaded guilty to fourth-degree assault for knocking the woman off a curb during the Oct. 18 demonstration. She suffered a bleeding, lacerated elbow, and a judge ordered jail time, probation, community service, and restitution.
