The Federal Aviation Administration will reduce flight capacity by 10% at 40 major airports across the country.

A final vote to reopen the federal government is expected on Wednesday, Nov. 12. That legislative process, which started in the U.S. Senate Monday night, will not immediately end the chaos at places like airports.

The FAA is expected to release an official list of dozens of airports that will be impacted by the directive to reduce flights for safety reasons. Still, on Thursday morning, news outlets began reporting which airports would be affected,

More than 2,000 flights in the US are cancelled or delayed on Friday after airlines were told to cut traffic during the government shutdown. Domestic flights at 40 of the country's busiest airports will be affected as officials try to ease pressure on air traffic controllers.

The announcement marks a critical response to persistent staffing shortages caused by the prolonged government shutdown.

Although those flight cuts only directly impact the busiest airports in the nation, travelers here in Omaha are feeling the effects.

After hundreds across the past few days, the number appears down Tuesday as Delta said it had completed "planned FAA-directed flight cancellations through Nov. 12.
