The Thursday lawsuit said laying off nearly 2,000 people at the department will hurt schools and universities across the country.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has sued the Trump administration over the firing of nearly half of all workers at the U.S. Department of Education.

The lawsuit says 1,300 employees at the department have lost their jobs already, or approximately half the staff.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is suing the Trump Administration following layoffs under the Department of Education.
