Mikaela Shiffrin’s array of international fans who gathered in the Austrian Alps may have entertained the thought of witnessing those achievements when the American stood third after the opening run Saturday,

The legendary American says she's suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after a fall in a giant slalom race on Nov. 30. In the race, Italian Federica Brignone won gold, while USA's Paula Moltzan took bronze for her first individual world championship medal.

Swiss skier Camille Rast won the women's slalom at the Alpine world championships. Mikaela Shiffrin finished fifth and missed out on what would have been the American's record-setting 16th career medal at worlds.
