When Israel signed a ceasefire deal with Hamas in Gaza on January 15, the agreement was structured in three phases. Phase one, a six-week period in which Hamas would release hostages in return for Israel releasing Palestinians detained in its jails, ended on March 1.

Ayoub Maarouf expressed fear and concern for his family after Israel blocked the entry of aid trucks into Gaza. Israel said it had adopted a U.S. proposal for a temporary ceasefire during Ramadan and Passover hours after the first phase of the previously agreed ceasefire expired.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday said his country had cut off all supplies to Gaza “because Hamas steals the supplies and prevents the people of Gaza from getting them.”
