Seal lips should be generously lubricated to where they are wet during start-up, especially if an engine, transmission, or rear axle is going to sit for a while before operation.

Before that, the rear main oil seal had been a two-piece design. The problem with the two-piece seal is that it can sometimes allow oil to seep out.
