The villain, kept secret in the marketing, feels similarly shoehorned in, but clearly ties this movie to the next big Marvel release, Avengers: Payday, or whatever it's called. The entire modus operandi of the MCU is to keep viewers invested in the next thing; otherwise, the whole project crumbles.
