As the federal government and Google work through potential remedies for the company’s illegal monopoly over online search, OpenAI is interested in purchasing the Chrome browser, should the court order it be sold off to loosen Google’s grip on the market.

As Google continues to deal with government scrutiny over its search and advertising business practices (with the possibility that parts of its business will need to be broken off hanging in the air) OpenAI has thrown its hat into the ring for the company's browser business.

During the ongoing remedy phase of the Department of Justice's case against Google, OpenAI executive Nick Turley testified on Tuesday that his company would be interested in buying Chrome if Google was forced to sell it. Selling the Chrome web browser is one of the DOJ's proposed remedies for breaking up Google's search monopoly.
