The death toll from Hurricane Melissa has risen to 28 in Jamaica, the country's prime minister said in an update Saturday, days after the powerful hurricane made landfall as a Category 5 storm and tore through the island.

A Berkshire-based charity is sending humanitarian workers and aid to Jamaica to help communities devastated by Hurricane Melissa.

The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) will make a record payout of $70.8 million to Jamaica within 14 days to aid recovery efforts.
