The Supreme Court on Friday turned down President Trump's appeal seeking to fire an agency official. Instead, the justices said they would weigh in on the matter only after a judge rules next week on whether the firing was legal.

A lawyer for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of fatally gunning down U.S. health insurance executive Brian Thompson in December, told a judge Friday that her client was illegally searched during his arrest and she would seek to exclude that evidence from his trial on state murder and terrorism charges.

Trump’s moves have been deeply controversial while fueling tangible upheaval in the federal government and American society, which should ultimately make it tougher for the Supreme Court to rule in his favor without attracting harsh scrutiny. | Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images
