The Great Blizzard of 1978, often called the "White Hurricane," remains the worst winter storm in Ohio's recorded history. Striking from January 25 to 27, 1978, the storm paralyzed the state with record-low atmospheric pressure, hurricane-force winds, and massive snowdrifts. ✅ Key Statistics and Impact Fatalities: 51 deaths were reported in Ohio alone, primarily due to exposure, heart attacks from shoveling, or carbon monoxide poisoning in stranded vehicles. The Blizzard of ’78 blew through 47 years ago today. Starting on February 6, 1978, snow fell for 37 hours with rates up to 4 inches an hour at times. People attempted to leave work, and or school and many got stranded on the highway or had to walk back home in heavy snow and strong winds.
