In the aftermath of this massive eruption, Crater Lake became a sacred place, and continues to have significance for the Klamath people today. About 7,800 years ago, the mountain that once stood where Crater Lake now is, Mount Mazama, blew its top in the greatest Cascades explosion it the past 600,000 years - 40 to 50 times greater than Mount St. Helens.
