Mangroves are tidal swamps which are dominated by mangrove trees, which are highly adapted to thrive in salty water, and muddy low-oxygen sediments. Some mangrove species have “breathing” roots called pneumatophores, which rise above the water to absorb oxygen in oxygen-poor environments.
