Considered one of his John James Audubon's finest drawings, this dramatically composed image of a Fish Hawk, or Osprey, became Plate 81 of "The Birds of America." Audubon wrote, “When it plunges into the water in pursuit of a fish, it sometimes proceeds deep enough to disappear for an instant. The surge caused by its descent is so great as to make the spot around it present the appearance of a mass of foam. It mounts a few yards into the air, shakes the water from its plumage, squeezes the fish

The complete set - bound in four volumes - contains 435 portraits of North American birds, each painstakingly hand-painted and reproduced at life-size. 🦉🦅 So, it's no coincidence that it holds pride of place in our World of the Book exhibition. Principal Librarian Des Cowley reveals the intriguing stories behind this incredible work of art, including how the Libra

Naturalist and painter John James Audubon was born on this day in 1785 in San Domingue (Haiti) and came to New Orleans in 1821 while working on his “Birds of America” series. He painted game birds at the French Market and earned his livelihood painting portraits. THNOC’s acquisition of this rare, double-elephant Audubon Portfolio was made possible by the 2016 Laussat Society. | The Historic New Orleans Collection

Spotted an original John James Audubon Birds of America at Lehigh’s Linderman Library, one of the most remarkable bird books ever published. Each life-size painting was transformed into copperplate etchings and hand-colored by Robert Havell’s staff under Audubon’s direction. More than 1,000 birds appear across 435 plates, usually bound into four volumes. Originally about 200 sets were produced, and fewer than 120 complete sets remain today. This is one of the biggest books in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. John James Audubon’s immense 4-volume ‘Birds of America’ was made up of 435 hand-coloured prints. The artist insisted on having even the largest species reproduced life-size, resulting in dramatic prints on ‘Double Elephant’ size paper (approximately 100 x 67cm; 40 x 28 inches), one of the largest sizes of European handmade paper. | Royal Collection Trust

Exploring around the grave of John James Audubon, the French entrepreneur best known for his painting and documenting the birds of America. He published several volumes of ornithological studies and worked to create a complete pictoral record of bird species of North America. Although Audubon is surrounded by controversy, including claims of fraud and plagiarism, as well as his participation in slave trade, many groups retain his name for his contributions to the interests of "birding", though a

HNOC curators and preparators turned the page of John James Audubon’s “Birds of America” this week to reveal a print of the red-winged starling, or marsh blackbird. Known as a double-elephant folio because of its size, the publication is a pinnacle of book history. HNOC acquired a copy of its second edition—the Bien edition—in 2016. Spearheaded by Audubon’s son John Woodhouse Audubon, its plates were printed from 1858 to 1860 after the elder Audubon’s death in 1851. Lithographer Julius Bien tran

John James Audubon was America’s first celebrity naturalist. His Birds of America became a monument to nature. But on the Missouri in the 1840s, he saw abundance giving way to destruction. He painted what he loved, even as it began to vanish. | MeatEater
