In addition to manding (requesting) and echoics, I always try to use language to support Grace’s tacting (labeling) repertoire. When we play or go about our daily routines, I make sure to name everything in the environment or whatever it is we are doing. For example, if I hear an airplane when we are outside, I will tell Grace, “I hear an airplane! Look, there it is!” If I am holding her while multitasking, I always narrate what I am doing. Early echoics! The ability to echo the sounds and words of others is a crucial step to developing more complex language skills, such as mands! Mands (requests) are the first verbal operant acquired by children and initially take the form of crying (diaper change, hungry, bored). However, over time children soon replace crying with language. Finally, most problem behavior is a communication deficit, so the more language we can give our children, the less problem behavior they will have. #aba #app
